In his book "True North," Bill George emphasizes authentic leadership, which he characterizes as a leadership approach based on self-awareness, personal values, and a dedication to service. The author identifies the essential traits of authentic leadership by drawing on his own CEO experiences and conversations with more than 100 executives. He lists five characteristics of authentic leadership: heart, relationships, self-discipline, relationships, and values. The book presents several examples of how successful leaders have displayed these abilities in various industries, exploring each of these dimensions in great detail.

The book's emphasis on self-awareness in authentic leadership is one of its strong points. To assist readers in developing this talent, the author emphasizes that self-awareness is a crucial element of good leadership and offers a variety of tools and activities. Readers are prompted to examine their beliefs, experiences, and motives through these exercises and discover their true north—the inner compass that directs their decisions and actions.

The author makes the case that having solid relationships with stakeholders, consumers, and employees is crucial for effective leadership and offer advice on how to do so. It is as if you are the Chief of Police in a particular municipality that cares about his personnel and the community—improving discipline through good relationships and dedication to service. He cites leaders who have effectively exhibited these qualities in their interactions to underline the significance of empathy, listening and vulnerability in developing connections.

The book's emphasis on the value of service in authentic leadership is another quality. The author contends that servant leaders are more likely to succeed in the long run because they are more concerned with adding value for others than advancing their interests. He gives several examples of leaders who have effectively exemplified this dedication to service and exhorts readers to use a similar strategy in their leadership positions.

Overall, "True North" is an excellent tool for anyone who wants to lead with integrity and purpose. The book offers a variety of helpful advice and assistance for enhancing the traits and abilities necessary for effective leadership, and it is well-written and exciting. The author strongly emphasizes self-awareness, relationships, and service, and his examples of influential leaders are both motivating and enlightening. "True North" is a must-read for everyone who wants to develop into a more prosperous and genuine leader, whether a seasoned CEO or a new manager.

As a cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy, I acquired some leadership principles mentioned in the book: True North. It states that authentic leadership, self-awareness, personal values, and, most of all, dedication to service—are the leadership I want to apply when I graduate from the Academy. I have always wanted to serve the community and give them what service they deserve. I may need more experience in the field, but I am empowering myself with the core values instilled in me by the Academy. I am flexible to changes and strengthened by the challenges the Academy has given us. Stability under pressure is my adapting tool that the Academy instilled in us. This tool will help us surpass all the challenges that we will face outside when we graduate and become public safety officers. A good mindset is needed to lead your people with harmonious relationships and serve the community, keeping them safe from criminality.
