Movie Review of The Pale Blue Eyes 2022

Scott Cooper's historical mystery-thriller "The Pale Blue Eye" is based on Louis Bayard's book of the same name. Christian Bale plays an investigator in the film looking into a string of homicides at West Point Military Academy in the middle of the 19th century. Fans of the genre should not miss "The Pale Blue Eye" because of its captivating plot, masterfully designed suspense, and excellent performances. [1]

Martin Van Buren was president when the movie was set in 1830. Christian Bale's character, Augustus Landor, a retired investigator, is asked to investigate a string of murders at West Point Military Academy. A young cadet, Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), who acts as his assistant, is with him. As they investigate the case further, they find a network of lies and deceit that threatens the organization.

The plot of "The Pale Blue Eye" is one of its strong points. The film is a brilliantly constructed mystery that keeps viewers guessing until the end. The narrative has many unexpected turns, which keep the audience on the edge of their seats the entire time. Cooper and Paul Tamasy's screenplay is precisely organized and well-paced, which enables the tension to develop steadily throughout the movie.

The military asked alcoholic retired investigator Augustus Landor to look into Cadet Leroy Fry's hanging at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, in October 1830. Since his daughter Mattie went away a few years ago, Landor, a widower, has lived alone.

Fry's heart was extracted from his body after he was hanged. When Landor examines the body in the morgue, he discovers a little note fragment that Fry had been holding onto firmly. Additionally, the scars on Fry's fingers and neck indicate that he was murdered rather than hanging himself.

Edgar Allan Poe, a fellow cadet at the academy who has shown interest in the case, is recruited by Landor in secret. The writing on the message fragment leads Poe and Landor to believe that it calls Fry to a secret rendezvous. It is assumed that the murder may have been related to black magic practices after a butchered cow and a sheep were discovered nearby.

Ballinger, another cadet, goes missing and is subsequently discovered hanging with his heart and genitalia took. Landor assumes that a third cadet, Stoddard, a coworker of the two deceased, had cause to believe he was the next person to be slain when he vanished.

The family of Dr. Daniel Marquis, who was initially invited into the case to conduct the autopsy on Fry, comes under suspicion from Landor and Poe. He suspects his daughter Lea and son Artemus in particular (who suffers from random seizures). Landor discovers an old officer's uniform while at Dr. Marquis' residence; a man posing as an officer was engaged in the dismemberment of Fry's body. When confronted by Landor, Dr. Marquis acknowledges that he used black magic to heal Lea of her seizures, and at first, she seemed to get better.

Poe agrees to make anything Lea requests since he is mesmerized by her. He is drugged, though, and when he awakens, Artemus and Lea are preparing to remove his heart as part of the ritual to heal Lea. Landor saves Poe, but Lea and Artemus perish when the structure catches fire.

The military thanks Landor for his service, believing the case is now closed. After he has recovered from his near-death experience, Poe informs Landor that the handwriting on the note fragment he discovered in Fry's hand is identical to Landor's. By connecting all the dots in the evidence he has obtained, it is clear that Landor was responsible for the cadets' deaths.

Two years ago, after attending her first ball, Mattie, the daughter of Landor, was sexually assaulted by Fry, Ballinger, and Stoddard. She was so traumatized by the incident that she eventually committed herself by jumping over a cliff. Landor hid this information from everyone and instead pretended that she had fled.

Landor, distraught, decided to exact revenge on his daughter. He left Fry a message and lured him to a deserted area before hanging him. However, Landor was compelled to leave the body when a patrol passed. Lea and Artemus then stole the heart for their ritual. Landor murdered Ballinger and then dismembered his body to give the impression that the cadet had been killed by the same "madman" who had mutilated Fry's body.

Poe reveals to Landor that he has two notes with handwriting samples that can immediately connect Landor to the murders, but he burns them before he leaves. Later, Landor can be seen near the cliff's edge, where his daughter died by jumping. "Rest, my love," he says as he lets the ribbon from her hair flutter away in the breeze. [2]

As a cadet of the Philippine National Police Academy, it is familiar to see the United States Military Academy Cadets' uniform, which is patterned to our gala uniform in the Academy. Because we all wear the same uniform, I recognize myself among the Cadets. The movie also refers to other regulations, such as the demerit system used by the Academy. I took away from the film that we shouldn't let our emotions affect our job to prevent it from being impacted. When we let our feelings affect what we do, we can use the law to satisfy our emotions of anger and revenge. He is good at investigation, which is one of the reasons I respect him. He is tenacious in pursuing information and evidence regarding the Cadet's death. I'll be unwavering in my search for evidence in the cases I will handle when I become a commissioned police officer.
